Steelhead
Steelhead are sea-run rainbow trout that migrate between the Pacific Ocean and California's coastal streams and rivers. These anadromous fish spend most of their adult lives in saltwater but return to freshwater to spawn. Steelhead are prized by anglers for their incredible fighting ability and acrobatic leaps. Special regulations apply including specific seasons, barbless hooks, and catch-and-release requirements in many waters to protect declining populations. Steelhead fishing is challenging and requires knowledge of seasonal runs, water conditions, and proper techniques. Always check the current CDFW regulations and practice proper steelhead conservation.
