California Golden Trout Locations
The California golden trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss aguabonita) is California's official state fish, native to the high-altitude waters of the Sierra Nevada. These beautiful fish, with their distinctive golden flanks and vibrant red markings, are found in pristine alpine lakes and streams 6,890 feet (2,100 m) to 10,000 feet (3,000 m) in elevation. Listed as a Species of Special Concern by CDFW, golden trout have special harvest regulations in their native waters - typically a 5-fish daily bag limit with 10-inch minimum size. Always check the current CDFW regulations before fishing. Learn more about golden trout conservation efforts.
